Does this fountain need a filter? What is the black sponge for?
No traditional filter is needed. The sponge only catches hair and debris. It does not filter the water. It's reusable, so just rinse it now and then.
What is the best way to move the fountain?
Empty both tanks first, then lift it from the base. Don't carry it by the top tray.
Which features are limited on battery power?
On battery, the fountain switches to sensor mode to save power. Water flows when your cat walks up and stops when they leave. That's how one charge lasts over 20 days. Continuous flow mode works only when it's plugged in. Plug it back in and all modes turn on again.
Can I turn it off while it's plugged in?
Not while it's plugged in. When the fountain has power, it stays on so your cat always has fresh water. To turn it off, unplug the cable first. Then it runs on its built-in battery, and you can switch it off with the power button.
What should I know about cleaning and setup?
Rinse the steel tray and empty the wastewater tank every few days. Refill the clean tank with fresh water. Never put the base with the pump in the dishwasher.
